User-reported bug reproduced with https://youtu.be/Su1YPINOi0M; no existing issue.

Description

Running premieres could hide the seek bar because both built-in extraction and authenticated yt-dlp selected a stream containing only the last 30 seconds.

Use the Android DASH manifest when built-in HLS has no seekable duration marker or its rewind window is limited to 30 seconds, preserving longer HLS windows. For limited yt-dlp live streams, try authenticated default clients before a final retry without cookies, and retain the first playable stream if those retries fail.

Release note

Restore seeking during running premieres with built-in extraction and yt-dlp when Always use cookies is enabled.

Release note images

Testing

  1. Open a running public premiere with built-in extraction. Confirm the seek bar appears and seeking backward plays earlier content.
  2. Select yt-dlp and repeat with Always use cookies enabled and disabled. Both configurations should allow seeking when YouTube provides a rewindable stream.
  3. Check ordinary videos and authenticated-only playback still work. A live stream without a rewindable source should remain playable.

Additional context

Reproduced and verified on Nico’s laptop with both engines. Added regression coverage for manifest selection, default-client fallback, and preserving authenticated playback when anonymous extraction fails.

Documentation correction: OpenTubeX/opentubex.github.io#102.

Changes made with GPT-6.1-Sol through the Codex harness in T3 Code.

Use the Android DASH manifest when the built-in WEB response only provides a short HLS window. Retry limited authenticated yt-dlp live streams anonymously while retaining the first playable stream if retries fail.

  • [FIX] Premiere seeking: Built-in playback now uses Android DASH when WEB DASH is unavailable, and yt-dlp retries limited live streams without cookies while retaining the first playable stream if retries fail.
  • [API] Android live manifests: Extracts and deciphers Android DASH alongside HLS for playback selection.
  • [TEST] Premiere playback coverage: Adds checks for manifest selection and yt-dlp retries with preferred/default clients and failed anonymous extraction.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The change adds Android DASH manifest retrieval, adjusts live manifest selection for limited DVR windows, and updates yt-dlp retries to retain limited-DVR sources. Unit and end-to-end tests cover selection and retry behavior.

Changes

Live manifest playback

Layer / File(s) Summary
Android manifest retrieval
src/renderer/helpers/player/liveManifest.js, src/renderer/helpers/api/local.js, tests/unit/live-manifest.test.mjs
Shared helpers parse DVR-window durations and retrieve HTTPS Android HLS or DASH URLs. Local video information now includes the deciphered Android DASH URL. Unit tests cover DASH URL validation and retrieval.
Live manifest selection
src/renderer/views/Watch/Watch.js, tests/unit/live-manifest-selection.test.mjs
Playback prefers YouTube DASH, uses Android DASH when the HLS DVR window is at most 30 seconds, and otherwise selects HLS. Unit tests cover the selection cases.
Limited-DVR extraction retries
src/renderer/helpers/player/ytDlpPlayback.js, e2e/tests/offline/watch-page.spec.mjs
Extraction can retain the first limited-DVR source from any attempt. When it retains such a source, the final attempt disables authentication. End-to-end tests check retry order, authentication settings, and the selected stream.

Priority: ➖ Normal

Estimated code review effort: 3 (Moderate) | ~25 minutes

Change: Bug fix

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 3988b

Playback remains available, but a narrow retry sequence can lose available formats by retaining an incomplete extraction. Prefer the later complete source; otherwise the change is mergeable with this bounded limitation acknowledged.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 3988b

Playback gains another manifest source and may retry without saved authentication. Existing URL checks and stale-playback guards remain in place. No security regression was established in the reviewed flow, but external credential handling and access decisions remain incompletely verified.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • observed — The additional manifest destination comes from the existing Android player response for the requested video and receives the same generated proof token when present. The new accessor does not accept a separate caller-supplied URL parameter.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Watch retains its existing handling of login-required, unplayable and DRM states before manifest selection, including the pre-existing yt-dlp/IP-block continuation. Adding DASH to the result does not remove that control.
  • observed — Authentication remains an explicit extraction parameter and part of request/cache identity. The new final attempt reduces that parameter to false rather than acquiring another identity. The reviewed repository calls do not establish implicit cookie behavior inside the external deciphering implementation.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Identical concurrent extractions share a pending promise keyed by video and configuration; ownership is removed in finally. Live sources bypass playback caching, and Watch rejects stale completions after video-load or playback-engine changes before assigning the returned source.

What these scenarios measure
  • Startup phases are cumulative from launching Electron. Interactive means the top navigation and tab bar are visible. Startup frame sampling runs from the initial route commit until that point.
  • Large route navigation opens 933 subscribed channels. Channel search filters that list down to one channel.
  • Subscription switches process 33,588 cached video records. Scrolling moves through the first rendered page for 60 animation frames.
  • Renderer heap growth is the used JavaScript heap increase after 10 Subscribed Channels and Trending navigation cycles, with renderer garbage collection before each reading.
  • Local playback start runs from submitting a watch URL until the bundled demo video emits playing. It makes no network requests.
  • Packed code size totals all emitted JavaScript and CSS, including renderer chunks, the main process, preload, and BotGuard.

No regression crossed the configured thresholds.
