fix(connect): clear persisted keys on sign-out and removal - #2124
OS-1074: make Connect sign-out and plugin removal revoke the cloud key before clearing local credentials. The existing durable local cleanup remains in this PR.
Resolution
GraphQL sign-out calls Mothership's server-key self-unregister endpoint and requires revoked: true before resetting the local identity. Cloud failure retains the key for retry.
Plugin removal, including the legacy unsupported-version cleanup path, sends the current key through an HTTPS request header and requires revocation confirmation before deleting credential files. The key is fed to curl over stdin, not placed in command arguments.
Local credential reset, relay teardown, nginx reload retry, and preservation of unrelated PM2 apps remain as previously validated.
Dependencies and rollout
Deploy unraid/key-server#797.
Deploy unraid/mothership#829.
Ship this Unraid 7 plugin/API change.
Deploying this PR before its cloud dependencies would make sign-out and removal fail closed. Public PR is approved for OS-1074.
Plugin XML parsed; both changed embedded Bash scripts passed bash -n.
New test covers cloud revocation failure retaining local credentials.
Prior artifact validation
The previous head 6dd070e6b18982ca2752712ff962192a329c2db8 passed required CI, CodeQL, and Codecov. Its exact PLG was installed on Unraid 7.3.2 and tested for local sign-out, write failure, legacy unlink failure, email cleanup, uninstall success/failure with unrelated PM2 app, and nginx reload retry. Those results do not validate the new cloud calls in current head 5ed83f932.
Remaining gates
Current-head CI, CodeQL, Codecov, review clearance, exact installed Unraid 7.3.2 artifact test, live key-server/Mothership integration, and active cloud relay rejection remain pending. GitHub currently records CHANGES_REQUESTED; do not merge until review and required gates pass. Cloud relay behavior should be checked with a disposable identity after all dependencies deploy.
Summary by CodeRabbit
Bug Fixes
Signing out now revokes the associated cloud key and clears saved identity information.
If revocation fails, saved credentials remain intact so sign-out can be retried.
Logout now clears published server and owner information even if stopping the mothership controller fails.
Uninstall and unsupported-version cleanup verify credential revocation and configuration removal before completing.
Cleanup failures prevent completion, with attempts to restore the API when applicable.
Configuration updates are saved in order to avoid overlapping writes interfering with each other.
It looks like this branch is under active development. To avoid overwhelming you with review comments due to an influx of new commits, CodeRabbit has automatically paused this review. You can configure this behavior by changing the reviews.auto_review.auto_pause_after_reviewed_commits setting.
Connect sign-out now revokes current and legacy cloud keys, persists and verifies cleared identity, and removes the legacy credential file. Plugin cleanup revokes available keys and manages API shutdown, configuration removal, and nginx reload.

revokeCloudKey() attempts revocation for the current key and any distinct legacy key. resetUser() persists and verifies cleared identity before removing the legacy file. Config writes are serialized by path. Tests cover revocation, persistence, verification, and cleanup outcomes.

The resolver revokes keys and resets configuration before emitting logout. If identity verification or legacy cleanup fails after reset, it emits logout before rethrowing. The mothership handler attempts to stop its controller before publishing cleared server and owner state, and publishes that state even if stopping fails.

Merge Risk: Low · previous review 2c25c
Removing the plugin or signing out now revokes the cloud key before local credentials are cleared. If revocation fails, the credentials are kept so the user can retry. Removal can stay blocked until the user clears the files by hand when the server is unreachable or rejects a key that is already revoked. This is a bounded, recoverable limitation. Merging is reasonable once the key-server and Mothership dependencies are deployed and the current head passes CI.

Explanation
The title "fix(connect): clear persisted keys on sign-out and removal" matches the main change. The PR revokes the Connect cloud key before clearing local credentials during GraphQL sign-out and plugin removal, and the changeset includes the sign-out reset, legacy key-file cleanup, and plugin removal hook. The title is specific and concise, and it follows a conventional commit style. It omits the revoke-before-clear ordering, which is the key safety behavior, but it does not misrepresent the change.

- Line 54: Update the sign-out cleanup flow around ConfigService.set so it does
not publish the cleared identity until persistence succeeds; alternatively,
restore the prior config if persistence fails. Ensure a failed connectSignOut
leaves the in-memory identity consistent with the still-persisted legacy key, as
read by ConnectSettingsService.isSignedIn().
- Around line 50-53: Update resetUser() so its identity reset explicitly
includes an empty email before building the config, ensuring the spread clears
the signed-in email in memory and includes it in the persisted identity
comparison.
Review comments at @plugin/plugins/dynamix.unraid.net.plg:
- Line 282: Update the removal hook’s pgrep check so it verifies the PM2 worker
has stopped using PM2 status or the worker PID, rather than matching the
application script name; keep credential deletion conditional on that
verification succeeding.
- Around line 276-279: Update the plugin-removal hook so a failed plugin removal
starts the Unraid API again after the stop operation, using the existing
rc.unraid-api or unraid-api service-control path. Preserve the current warning
for removal failures.

<title>PM2 - Ecosystem File</title>
<location>https://doc.pm2.io/en/runtime/guide/ecosystem-file/</location>
<excerpt>citeturn0search0 [wordlim: 200] Crawled: last month; Seamlessly than acting on an app you can start/stop/restart/delete all apps contained in a configuration file: ... pm2 restart ecosystem.config.js
# Ecosystem File
## Configuration File
When managing multiple applications with PM2, use a JS configuration file to organize them.
### Generate configuration
To generate a sample configuration file you can type this command:
`$ pm2 init simple
`
This will generate a sample `ecosystem.config.js`:
`module.exports = {
apps : [{
name : "app1",
script : "./app.js"
}]
}
`
If you are creating your own configuration file, make sure it ends with `.config.js` so PM2 is able to recognize it as a configuration file.
### Acting on Configuration File
Seamlessly than acting on an app you can start/stop/restart/delete all apps contained in a configuration file:
`# Start all applications
pm2 start ecosystem.config.js
# Stop all
pm2 stop ecosystem.config.js
# Restart all
pm2 restart ecosystem.config.js
# Reload all
pm2 reload ecosystem.config.js
# Delete all
pm2 delete ecosystem.config.js
`
#### Act on a specific process
You can also act on a particular application by using its name and the option `--only <app_name>`:
`pm2 start ecosystem.config.js --only api-app
`
Note: the `--only` option works for start/restart/stop/delete as well
You can even specify multiple apps to be acted on by specifying each app name separated by a comma:
`pm2 start ecosystem.config.js --only "api-app,worker-app"
`
### Switching environments
You can specify different environment variable set via the `env_*` option.
Example:
`module.exports = {
apps : [{
name : "app1",
script : "./app.js",
env_production: {
NODE_ENV: "production"
},
env_development: {
NODE_ENV: "development"
}
}]
}
`
Now to switch between variables in different environment, specify the `--env [env name]` option:
`pm2 start ecosystem.config.js --env production
pm2 restart ecosystem.config.js --env development
`
## Attributes available
Application behavior and configuration can be fine-tuned with the following attributes:
### General
Field | Type | Example | Description
--- | --- | --- | ---
name | (string) | “my-api” | application name (default to script filename without extension)
script | (string) | ”./api/app.js” | script path relative to pm2 start
cwd | (string) | “/var/www/” | the directory from which your app will be launched
args | (string) | “-a 13 -b 12” | string containing all arguments passed via CLI to script
interpreter | (string) | “/usr/bin/python” | interpreter absolute path (default to node)
interpreter_args | (string) | ”–harmony” | option to pass to the interpreter
node_args | (string) | | arguments passed to the node interpreter (interpreter_args is an alias of this option)

<title>PM2 - Ecosystem File</title>
<location>https://doc.pm2.io/en/runtime/guide/ecosystem-file/</location>
<excerpt>citeturn0search0 [wordlim: 200] Crawled: last month; pm2 restart ecosystem.config.js ... source_map_support | boolean | true | default to true, [enable/disable source map file] ... `$pm2 start test.js --node-args "port=3001 sitename='first pm2 app'"
# Ecosystem File
## Configuration File
When managing multiple applications with PM2, use a JS configuration file to organize them.
### Generate configuration
To generate a sample configuration file you can type this command:
`$ pm2 init simple
`
This will generate a sample `ecosystem.config.js`:
`module.exports = {
apps : [{
name : "app1",
script : "./app.js"
}]
}
`
If you are creating your own configuration file, make sure it ends with `.config.js` so PM2 is able to recognize it as a configuration file.
### Acting on Configuration File
Seamlessly than acting on an app you can start/stop/restart/delete all apps contained in a configuration file:
`# Start all applications
pm2 start ecosystem.config.js
# Stop all
pm2 stop ecosystem.config.js
# Restart all
pm2 restart ecosystem.config.js
# Reload all
pm2 reload ecosystem.config.js
# Delete all
pm2 delete ecosystem.config.js
`
#### Act on a specific process
You can also act on a particular application by using its name and the option `--only <app_name>`:
`pm2 start ecosystem.config.js --only api-app
`
Note: the `--only` option works for start/restart/stop/delete as well
You can even specify multiple apps to be acted on by specifying each app name separated by a comma:
`pm2 start ecosystem.config.js --only "api-app,worker-app"
`
### Switching environments
You can specify different environment variable set via the `env_*` option.
Example:
`module.exports = {
apps : [{
name : "app1",
script : "./app.js",
env_production: {
NODE_ENV: "production"
},
env_development: {
NODE_ENV: "development"
}
}]
}
### Advanced features
Field | Type | Example | Description
--- | --- | --- | ---
instances | number | -1 | number of app instance to be launched
exec_mode | string | “cluster” | mode to start your app, can be “cluster” or “fork”, default fork
watch | boolean or [] | true | enable watch & restart feature, if a file change in the folder or subfolder, your app will get reloaded
ignore_watch | list | [”[\/\\]\./”, “node_modules”] | list of regex to ignore some file or folder names by the watch feature
max_memory_restart | string | “150M” | your app will be restarted if it exceeds the amount of memory specified. human-friendly format : it can be “10M”, “100K”, “2G” and so on…

By default PM2 avoid modifying environment when reloading, you need to pass the flag `--update-env` to tell PM2 to update it, note that if you want to pick up the chance inside the ecosystem file, you need to reload with the file like : `pm2 reload ecosystem.config.js --update-env` ... it seems that in order to make changes work, you need to delete the current process running.

Hey man, sorry if it's too late:
it seems that in order to make changes work, you need to delete the current process running. I figured out it after reading this answer.
In my case, it worked after deleting the process/version/app I wanted to update.

## What's going wrong?
When I try and restart processes by id PM2 tells me the process is not found. I have to delete the process and start it again.
## How could we reproduce this issue?
I'm not sure, it seems to be intermittent. But most times I try and restart this happens.

Start the API when plugin removal fails.
A successful plugins remove -b restarts missing PM2 applications. However, if that command fails, this hook only prints a warning after stopping the API and does not start it again. The API can remain unavailable until a later start or reboot.

Update the plugin-removal hook so a failed plugin removal starts the Unraid API

Check the PM2 worker, not the application script name.
The removal hook ignores stop failures, then checks only for node /usr/local/unraid-api/dist/main.js. PM2 7 fork mode starts the worker with ProcessContainerFork.js, so a running worker may not match this pattern. The hook can then delete credentials without establishing that the API stopped. Use PM2 status or the worker PID to verify that the process stopped before deleting the files. Confirm the packaged command line during Unraid 7 uninstall QA.

Update the removal hook’s pgrep check so it verifies the PM2 worker has stopped
using PM2 status or the worker PID, rather than matching the application script
name; keep credential deletion conditional on that verification succeeding.

Minor · Rollback connect.json when legacy-file cleanup fails. · connect.config.service.ts:62-74
packages/unraid-api-plugin-connect/src/config/connect.config.service.ts:62-74 🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win
Rollback connect.json when legacy-file cleanup fails.
If unlink(legacyPath) fails after the cleared config was written, resetUser() rejects while ConfigService still contains the old identity. The registered persister can write that stale identity back to connect.json during shutdown, so a reboot can restore the credentials. Preserve the old file state when cleanup fails.

Tear down the relay when legacy cleanup fails after identity reset
If removing myservers.cfg fails after persistence succeeds, resetUser() has already cleared the identity in memory and on disk but throws before this logout event is emitted. Consequently, MothershipHandler.logout() never calls mothershipController.stop(), leaving the existing WebSocket and remote-query subscription active despite the cleared identity. The subscription handler dispatches RemoteGraphQLEvent messages without rechecking the API key, and the identity-change handler only restarts connections for nonempty keys; neither closes this connection. Ensure relay teardown still runs after a partially completed reset while preserving the cleanup error returned to the caller.
Restore only the API process before each early exit.
After the hook deletes the API process, each failure branch can leave the shared API unavailable until an operator intervenes. Do not call rc.unraid-api start: its cleanup stops and kills PM2 globally. Start the API ecosystem directly instead; api/ecosystem.config.json contains only unraid-api, so unrelated PM2 applications remain running.

Review comment at @plugin/plugins/dynamix.unraid.net.plg around lines 282 - 301:
In the Connect credential-removal block, restore only the Unraid API before each
failure exit after it has been stopped: add a helper that starts the API
ecosystem directly through PM2, then call it if the stopped-state check,
credential removal, or nginx reload fails. Do not use rc.unraid-api start, which
could affect unrelated PM2 applications.
This test checks cleanup failure and relay teardown, not the error-message format. Use .rejects.toThrow() so a wording change does not break the test. As per coding guidelines: “Use .rejects.toThrow() without arguments to test that functions throw errors. Don't test exact error message strings unless the message format is specifically what you're testing.”

This test checks that sign-out rejects and retains credentials. It does not test the message format. Use .rejects.toThrow() so a message change does not fail the test. As per coding guidelines: “Use .rejects.toThrow() without arguments to test that functions throw errors.”

Blocked plugin removal has no recovery path for a key that fails the pattern.
The removal hook stops with exit 1 and keeps the credentials when:
The key does not match ^unraid_[A-Za-z0-9]{57}$. No request is sent, so a retry fails the same way.
curl cannot reach the endpoint within the 5 s connect timeout or the 15 s limit. An offline server takes this path.
The response is not a 2xx status, or the body lacks .revoked == true.
Retries can clear transient network failures and 5xx responses. A key that fails the pattern cannot pass on any retry. It needs a manual edit of the flash files.
Decide the removal behavior for these cases before you change the code. Keep the fail-closed behavior for network errors and 5xx responses. For a key that fails the pattern, define an explicit exit path. Confirm how self-unregister answers an already-revoked key before you change the handling of 401, 403, or 404 responses.

Remove the jq dependency from the unsupported-version Connect cleanup.
The inline cleanup reads the Connect key with an unguarded jq call at line 126. It checks revocation with jq -e at line 160. If jq is absent on an Unraid version in this range, the cleanup can fail whenever a key is present. Line 126 returns 1 when connect.json exists, and the revocation pipeline at line 160 cannot succeed. Each retry then retains the credentials. The packaged cleanup.sh avoids this by checking command -v jq before it reads the username and skipping that step when jq is missing. The plugin does not install jq.
Read the key with sed and check the revocation response with grep:

Its exact PLG was installed on Unraid 7.3.2 and tested for local sign-out, write failure, legacy unlink failure, email cleanup, uninstall success/failure with unrelated PM2 app, and nginx reload retry. Those results do not validate the new cloud calls in current head5ed83f932.Remaining gates
Current-head CI, CodeQL, Codecov, review clearance, exact installed Unraid 7.3.2 artifact test, live key-server/Mothership integration, and active cloud relay rejection remain pending. GitHub currently records
