Compatibility
The optimization is restricted to automatically inferred navigation with more than 512 entries. Manual navigation, configured theme sidebars, smaller collections, and direct generateHtmlPage callers retain the complete navigation tree.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Added an option to enable automatic navigation for pages whose navigation is inferred from Markdown content.
For automatically generated navigation with more than 512 items, the current page’s group remains fully expanded while other groups show a representative section link. Navigation with 512 or fewer items, and manually configured navigation, remains complete.
Chores
Benchmark regression checks now consider both percentage and absolute timing increases, with a configurable absolute threshold. Invalid threshold values are rejected.
The SSG pipeline identifies Markdown-derived navigation and passes that setting to HTML rendering. For large automatic navigation, rendering can retain the current section and reduce other sections to representative items. The collection benchmark checker now applies an absolute regression limit alongside its percentage limit.

The SSG configuration adds an optional automatic-navigation flag. The build sets it when configured navigation is absent and the theme sidebar is empty, then passes it through built-in and sequential rendering.
The HTML renderer accepts the flag. If scoping is enabled and navigation has more than 512 items, it retains the group containing the current path and reduces other groups to representative items. Otherwise, it renders complete navigation. Single-page, batch, and externalized batch generation pass the configured flag. Tests cover scoped automatic navigation and complete manual navigation.
The benchmark checker reports a regression only when both percentage and absolute increases exceed their limits. The absolute limit defaults to 0.05 ms and can be configured with --max-absolute-regression-ms. Tests cover a 100% increase below the absolute limit and invalid absolute-threshold values.

Use a smaller tolerance for fast query metrics.
The benchmark reports query timings per operation. (raw.githubusercontent.com) A change from 0.0004 ms to 0.04 ms passes this gate despite a 100-fold slowdown. At 10,000 lookups, that adds about 396 ms.

Gzip uses JS/CSS/HTML/JSON assets. HTML gzip tracks rendered page output without JS/CSS assets. Requests estimate index.html plus referenced local initial assets. Relative build-time deltas stay informational because runner variance is higher than the size gates; absolute build-time ceilings still apply via tools/benchmarks/perf-budgets.json.

Moving a rule into Rust grows the native binding and shrinks the JavaScript beside it. Both rows are shown so a migration reports its cost, not only its win. An artifact that was not built reads not built rather than zero, so an unbuilt target cannot be mistaken for one that vanished. These rows are informational and gate nothing.
Regression Gate
Runtime regressions fail when head throughput is more than 10% slower than base (async rows are informational only; their worker-scheduling variance exceeds the threshold on quiet PRs). Bundle and rendered HTML regressions fail when gzipped size grows by more than 5%. Absolute bundle, output, build-time, and runtime-floor ceilings are checked against tools/benchmarks/perf-budgets.json. Maintainers can intentionally override both gates by applying the benchmark-regression-accepted PR label, which sets OX_CONTENT_BENCHMARK_ALLOW_REGRESSION=1.
No threshold regressions found.
Performance Budgets
Absolute ceilings from tools/benchmarks/perf-budgets.json. Head measurements fail when a ceiling is exceeded or a runtime floor is missed. The OX_CONTENT_BENCHMARK_ALLOW_REGRESSION override is the same path as the relative regression gate.

Preserve an explicitly empty theme sidebar.
When ssgOptions.theme.sidebar is [], Boolean(ssgOptions.theme?.sidebar.length) is false. The code then calls buildNavItems(...) and sets autoNavigation to true. This can replace the configured empty sidebar with inferred Markdown navigation, and large collections can also receive scoped navigation.

Update the `hasThemeSidebar` check used to choose between `buildThemeNavItems`
and `buildNavItems` so it tests whether `ssgOptions.theme.sidebar` is defined,
not whether it contains items. Preserve an explicitly empty sidebar and prevent
inferred Markdown navigation from being selected in that case.
Exercise both custom threshold options with valid values.
The helper forwards options, but current tests cover only defaults and invalid absolute input. Add one case where both custom thresholds are stricter than the defaults. This detects either option being silently ignored.
