Remember yum chain after restarting the client within the same life

I've seen people talking about the game forgetting yums after a restart.
Having the server send this information should be easy.
I think it's a nice quality of life feature :)

This feature is certainly something desired.

Instead of a more complex protocol change, how about making a client side system that can reference some kind of temp save file?

Temp save file could be used, yes. Although sometimes game crashes lead to restarting and then to forgetting yum chains. This client side system then should be robust enough to handle game crashes. When do you think this temp file should be written to? On each eating event? Isn't it excessive? But fewer writes seems impossible because a crash could happen.

Realistically you don't usually eat that often during a life. Would it add all that much extra work for the game? It would only need to write to that file, not constantly read it. That game already has a way to handle that.
You could record the life id, and have it check if that has changed when the play connects. If it hasn't, read in the list of yums. If it's different, wipe the file and record the new life id. Something like that?
