## A minute on each machine

The price of one minute of a job, in US dollars, on a machine with the CPUs and memory of GitHub’s runner. AWS’s prices are for us-east-1 on 12 October 2026, with the machine’s disk and public address counted in; spot prices change through the day and from zone to zone. Cloudflare’s are with every CPU busy, before its plan. A dash is a machine that cloud does not have.

The same when the new attempt does not fit your account’s on-demand limit: a 32-CPU job in an account that may run 16 on-demand CPUs goes back on a spot machine, in another zone or of another type first, and its row says so. ... `superci jobs retrieve ID` shows what was asked and what AWS answered, and a job’s row says when its machine was not the first choice.

# Spot machines

How SuperCI uses AWS spot machines, what happens when AWS takes one back mid-job, and how to keep a job off spot.

On AWS, jobs run on spot machines unless you say otherwise. Spot machines are AWS’s spare capacity, at a much lower price. The price of that is that AWS can take one back with two minutes’ notice.

## When AWS takes a machine back

  1. The machine hears AWS’s notice, two minutes before it goes, and lets the job go on. A job that ends by itself in that time passes, and nothing more happens.
  2. Twenty seconds before the machine goes, a job still running has its runner stopped, so it fails at once instead of hanging.
  3. The dashboard shows the job as interrupted.
  4. When the job’s run has finished, SuperCI runs the job again. GitHub will not restart one job while its run is still going, so there is no earlier moment.
  5. The new attempt does not go to a spot machine: it goes to the next provider in your order below AWS’s spot machines, which is AWS on-demand unless you changed that.
A pool that had no machine within the last minute is not asked again, by that job or by one queued beside it. If none has a spot machine for the job, the job goes to the next provider in your order. With nothing else that can run it, it waits and keeps trying.

`superci jobs retrieve ID` shows what was asked and what AWS answered, and a job’s row says when its machine was not the first choice.

Your AWS account also has a limit on how many spot CPUs it runs at once in a region. Many jobs at once can go over it, and the ones over it are treated the same way: with on-demand next in your order, they run on-demand, at about twice the price. You can ask AWS for a higher limit.

On-demand machines have a limit of their own. When both limits are in use by your own jobs, the next job waits for one of them to end, as it would on GitHub’s runners. When a job asks for more CPUs than the limits allow at all, it fails saying which limits to raise.

## Jobs that must not be interrupted

A job that should never run twice, like a deploy, can ask for an on-demand machine in its label:

Copy

    `runs-on: superci/spot=false`

To keep every job off spot machines, tick No spot machines on the default machine under Workflows, or run `superci machine update --spot=false`.

## What it costs

A spot machine’s price is its zone’s spot price while it ran; an on-demand machine’s is AWS’s list price. The dashboard estimates a job’s cost while it runs and settles it at the prices AWS billed once it has ended.</excerpt>

<title>What your AWS account allows · SuperCI</title>

<excerpt>citeturn0search0 [wordlim: 200] Crawled: today; How SuperCI looks at an AWS account and works with what it allows: its regions, spot machines, CPUs at once and the runner image, and a project from AWS&#39;s new sign-up.

# What your AWS account allows

How SuperCI looks at an AWS account and works with what it allows: its regions, spot machines, CPUs at once and the runner image, and a project from AWS&#39;s new sign-up.

SuperCI works with what your AWS account allows, as it is. Nothing has to be changed in AWS to use it.

When you sign in, SuperCI looks at the account and shows what it found in the AWS account section of the Control plane, set-up and Add runners pages. In a terminal:

Copy

    `superci accounts retrieve aws`

## What it looks at

  * Regions. Which regions the account may work in. Where regions are chosen, one the account cannot use is shown and cannot be picked, with why.
  * Spot machines. Whether the account may start them. Where it may not, jobs run on on-demand machines, at about twice the price, and each job says so.
  * CPUs at once. How many jobs that is, with a link to ask AWS for more.
  * The runner image. Whether the image jobs run on is in each region the account may use.
  * Organization. </excerpt>

<title>Labels and machines · SuperCI</title>
<location>https://superci.dev/docs/labels</location>
<excerpt>citeturn0search1 [wordlim: 200] Crawled: 2 weeks ago; `runs-on: superci/cpu=16/arch=arm64/spot=false` ... Modal | 2 CPUs, 8 GB, 64 GB disk

On AWS the disk is the job’s whole root filesystem: the image uses about 18 GB of it, so the standard machine has about 40 GB free, and `superci/cpu=8/disk=120` about 100.
`family` | `superci/cpu=32/family=m8a` | Only this AWS machine family, or several: `family=m8a+r8a`. See below.
`scratch` | `superci/scratch=ramdisk` | Where what a job writes most is kept: `ramdisk` (in memory) or `localdisk` (a machine with an NVMe disk of its own). AWS, Linux.
`provider` | `superci/provider=aws` | Only this provider: `aws`, `cloudflare` or `modal`.
`spot` | `superci/spot=false` | Never a spot machine. See Spot machines.

Each key is said once, and each thing has one way to be said. Numbers have no units: `ram=32` is 32 GB.

Copy

    `runs-on: superci/cpu=16/arch=arm64/spot=false`

A label that is not understood fails its job at once, and the job’s page says what is wrong: a key no label has, a value out of its range, two things that do not go together (`arch=x64` with an arm64 family). One label for a job, not a list.

GPUs that can be named: `t4`, `l4`, `a10g`, `l40s` (AWS and Modal), and `a100`, `h100`, `h200`, `b200` (Modal).

The same keys are flags of `superci machine update`, which sets the default machine: `--cpu=8`, `--spot=false`, `--scratch=ramdisk`.

## The default machine

`runs-on: superci` gives each provider’s standard machine:

Provider | Standard machine
--- | ---
AWS | 4 CPUs, 8 GB, 60 GB disk
Cloudflare | 4 CPUs, 12 GB, 20 GB disk
Modal | 2 CPUs, 8 GB, 64 GB disk

On AWS the disk is the job’s whole root filesystem: the image uses about 18 GB of it, so the standard machine has about 40 GB free, and `superci/cpu=8/disk=120` about 100.

Under Workflows in the dashboard you can set your own default (say, 8 CPUs on arm64). A label that says nothing else then gets that machine.

## Which machine a job gets on AWS

A label says CPUs and memory. Several AWS machine types have them: for 32 CPUs and 128 GB, `m8a.8xlarge` and the older `m7a.8xlarge`, and with twice the memory `r8a.8xlarge` and `r7a.8xlarge`. A newer one runs the same job faster; which has a spot machine, and at what price, changes through the day.

SuperCI asks for a spot machine where it costs least for the speed it gives: it reads every candidate’s price in every zone and starts from the lowest, counting a newer generation as a fifth faster than the one before. </excerpt>

<title>GPU runners for GitHub Actions · SuperCI</title>
<location>https://superci.dev/docs/gpu</location>
<excerpt>citeturn0search2 [wordlim: 200] Crawled: 2 days ago; Beside it, an AWS machine has 4 CPUs and 16 GB of memory and a Modal sandbox 2 CPUs and 8 GB, unless the label says more: `superci/cpu=8/ram=32/gpu=l4`. ... For one like it, `superci/cpu=4/ram=32/gpu=any` gets a g4dn.2xlarge on AWS (8 CPUs, 32 GB, a T4), at $0.25 an hour on spot and $0.75 on demand that day.

## What it costs

GitHub’s own GPU runner is one size: 4 cores and a T4, at $0.052 a minute, which is $3.12 an hour. The same GPU in your own account, by the hour:

GPU | AWS machine | AWS spot | AWS on-demand | Modal, the GPU alone
--- | --- | --- | --- | ---
T4 | g4dn.xlarge | $0.27 | $0.53 | $0.59
L4 | g6.xlarge | $0.53 | $0.80 | $0.80
A10G | g5.xlarge | $0.40 | $1.01 | $1.10
L40S | g6e.xlarge | $1.83 | $1.86 | $1.95

AWS’s prices are for us-east-1 on 12 October 2026; spot prices move through the day. On AWS the machine’s CPUs and memory are in the price. On Modal they are billed beside the GPU, by the second: a sandbox with 2 CPUs, 8 GB and a T4 comes to about $0.92 an hour.

GitHub’s runner has 28 GB of memory, more than the machines in the table. For one like it, `superci/cpu=4/ram=32/gpu=any` gets a g4dn.2xlarge on AWS (8 CPUs, 32 GB, a T4), at $0.25 an hour on spot and $0.75 on demand that day. The calculator adds up a month of GPU jobs on that size beside GitHub’s bill.
