I want to be able to create a wildcard CNAME for a host of mine. Manually configuring all explicit CNAME records is tedious and error prone. I do not use unbound.

Allow wildcards for CNAMEs for hosts. So say *.host.home.arpa.

Describe alternatives you considered

I'm currently doing this manually, so bla.host.home.arpa, blabla.host.home.arpa, etc. Keeping this up to date is easy to forget, or get wrong.

All right, so this seems to be possible with host configuration:

host: *
domain: host.home.arpa
ip address: <ip of host.home.arpa>

So the solution here is a little similar to: #10661 . And I would say that the cause is somewhat similar as well.

I think this is mostly because the hosts section contains both static leases, and definitions such as the one above. I still find this colocation a little confusing. I understand that this is just how it turned out:

Dnsmasq allows a lot of options in a lot of combinations. The GUI had to make some decisions over time, so the local flag ended up in hosts instead of domains.

But it would be great if this bit of the UI could be made a little clearer. Maybe a distinction between static leases and host overrides for example? Or instructions on how to achieve the above (and the issue from the linked issue) in the docs. Just anything to give the user a little more context, and make the UI a little more self explanatory.
