Don't retry POST after a lost reply, timeout or 5xx - #8
zorionarrillaga wants to merge 5 commits into
Conversation
A POST that reached NetBird may already have created the object even when the reply is lost, times out or comes back as a 5xx from a proxy. Retrying it created a second object (e.g. two setup keys from one create_setup_key call, with only one reported to the agent). POST is now retried only on 429, which the server rejects before processing. GET, PUT and DELETE keep the existing retry behaviour. Tests cover one POST -> one create for a dropped connection, a timeout and a 503, plus the retries that remain.

⚠️ Unverified finding
Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.Mark a non-retried POST failure as an uncertain outcome.
A POST that fails with a transport error now throws immediately. At Lines 205-206, the
NetBirdApiErrormessage reads "Network error calling NetBird POST …". Status is 0. The 5xx path at Lines 225-231 also reports a plain failure. In both cases the server may already have created the object. A caller or an LLM agent that reads this as a definite failure may retry the POST itself. That recreates the duplicate-creation problem this PR removes.
Append a short note to the POST message, such as "the request may have been processed; verify before retrying". Alternatively, expose a flag on
NetBirdApiErrorfor this case.Based on learnings: for idempotency-sensitive mutating calls, an ambiguous response should be recorded as "uncertain", not "failed".

A POST that fails with a transport error or a 5xx is no longer retried, but the server may already have created the object. Say so in the error message, so a caller or an agent reading it doesn't simply send the POST again.

When
res.text()rejects for a GET, PUT, or DELETE response, this catch returns a terminalNetBirdApiError. It bypasses the existing non-POST transport-error retry path. Apply the same retry handling here, while retaining the POST warning.Suggested fix

The body-read failure now takes the same retry path as any other transport error for idempotent methods. A POST still fails once with the may-have-been-processed warning.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win
Do not retry a known authentication failure.
If a GET receives HTTP 401 or 403 and res.text() fails, this branch retries it despite the known status. It can send five requests instead of one. The terminal error then uses status 0, so verifyToken() returns "unknown" rather than "invalid". Check the response status before retrying a body-read failure, and retain known error statuses in the terminal error.

What broke
NetBirdClient(src/netbird/client.ts) retries every method the same way: on a network error, a timeout, a 429 or any 5xx. For a POST that is not safe. If NetBird has already created the object and only the reply is lost, the retry creates a second one.For example,
create_setup_keycan leave two live setup keys while the agent is told about one. The first key is never shown to anyone, so nobody revokes it.How it was reproduced
I used a local mock of
POST /api/setup-keyson 127.0.0.1 only; no NetBird account or real API was involved. The mock creates the key, then mishandles the first reply in one of three ways:mainkey-2key-2key-2What changed
In
decideRetry, a POST is no longer retried after a transport error, a timeout or a 5xx. It is still retried on 429, because the server rejected that request before processing it. Nothing else changes. How each method is treated, and why:
RequestOptions.methodisGET | POST | PUT | DELETE), so there was nothing to decide. After an ambiguous POST failure the caller now gets an error instead of a duplicate. Telling the agent that the outcome is unknown, and checking by listing what exists, would be a separate, larger change.
How it was tested
New tests in
test/client.test.ts(vitest):Results:
mainand pass with this change.npm run typecheck: clean (on 97a201d; the first commits had two type errors in the new tests).npm test: 13 files, 173 tests passed.Summary by CodeRabbit
