# S3/Remote URI Support with RunAI Streamer

## Summary

Added support for using remote storage URIs (S3, GCS, Azure, HTTP/HTTPS) directly with vLLM backend and RunAI Model Streamer, enabling fast model loading without downloading the entire model first.

## Problem

Previously, the HuggingFace server would fail when trying to use S3 URIs or other remote storage paths because:

1. The architecture validation step (`infer_vllm_supported_from_model_architecture()`) tried to fetch `config.json` using HuggingFace's `AutoConfig.from_pretrained()`
2. This only works with HuggingFace model IDs or local filesystem paths
3. Remote URIs (like `s3://bucket/model/`) would fail validation before vLLM could even start
4. This prevented using vLLM's RunAI Model Streamer feature for fast loading from remote storage

## Solution

Modified the architecture validation to:

1. **Detect remote URIs** - Automatically skip validation for paths starting with:
- `s3://` (AWS S3)
- `gs://` (Google Cloud Storage)
- `az://` or `azure://` (Azure Blob Storage)
- `http://` or `https://` (HTTP/HTTPS)
- `ftp://` (FTP)
- `hdfs://` (Hadoop HDFS)

2. **Respect explicit backend selection** - When `--backend=vllm` is explicitly set, skip validation to allow custom model paths

3. **Maintain backward compatibility** - Regular HuggingFace model IDs and local paths still go through validation as before

## Changes Made

### 1. Modified `huggingfaceserver/vllm/utils.py`

**Function:** `infer_vllm_supported_from_model_architecture()`

**Changes:**
- Added `force_vllm: bool = False` parameter
- Added remote URI detection logic
- Skip validation when `is_remote_uri` or `force_vllm` is True
- Added try-except for better error handling
- Added informative log messages

**Before:**

### 2. Modified `huggingfaceserver/__main__.py`

**Function:** `is_vllm_backend_enabled()`

**Changes:**
- Detect when `--backend=vllm` is explicitly set
- Pass `force_vllm` parameter to architecture check

## Backward Compatibility

✅ **Fully backward compatible** - No breaking changes:

- Regular HuggingFace model IDs still work: `--model_id=meta-llama/Llama-2-7b`
- Local paths still work: `--model_dir=/mnt/models/my-model`
- Default behavior unchanged for `--backend=auto`
- Only affects behavior when using remote URIs with `--backend=vllm`

## Requirements

To use RunAI Model Streamer with remote URIs:

1. **vLLM with RunAI support:**

2. **Proper credentials:** Set appropriate environment variables:
- AWS S3: `AWS_ACCESS_KEY_ID`, `AWS_SECRET_ACCESS_KEY`, `AWS_REGION`
- GCS: `GOOGLE_APPLICATION_CREDENTIALS`
- Azure: `AZURE_STORAGE_ACCOUNT`, `AZURE_STORAGE_KEY`

3. **Explicit backend flag:** Always use `--backend=vllm` with remote URIs

## Performance Benefits

Using RunAI Model Streamer with S3:
- **Faster startup** - Stream model weights directly to GPU without local storage
- **Reduced memory** - No need to download entire model to disk first
- **Cost savings** - No EBS volumes needed for model storage
- **Flexibility** - Easy model switching without re-downloading

## Known Limitations

1. **Architecture validation skipped** - When using remote URIs, the server cannot pre-validate if vLLM supports the model architecture. Ensure your model is in [vLLM's supported list](https://docs.vllm.ai/en/latest/models/supported_models/).

2. **Network dependency** - Model loading requires reliable network connection to remote storage.

3. **vLLM version** - RunAI streamer support requires vLLM >= 0.9.0 (currently using 0.11.2).

## Migration Guide

**Before (would fail):**

1. Auto-detect load format based on URI scheme
2. Support for pre-downloading config.json separately for validation
3. Better error messages for unsupported model architectures
4. Integration with KServe storage initializer for hybrid approach
