OSAlgoCalculator — OS Algorithm Visualizer

GitHub Release

A desktop application to visualize and solve core Operating System algorithms. Built with Java and JavaFX.

How to Install

Option 1 — Debian/Ubuntu Package (.deb) ✅ Recommended

For Ubuntu, Debian, Linux Mint and any Debian-based distro:

sudo dpkg -i osalgocalculator_1.0_amd64.deb

Once installed, search for "OSAlgoCalculator" in your application launcher and click to run.
No Java or JavaFX installation needed — everything is bundled.

To uninstall:

sudo dpkg -r osalgocalculator

Option 2 — Portable ZIP (Any Linux)

For any Linux distribution. No installation required.

  1. Extract the zip:
    unzip OSAlgoCalculator-linux-portable.zip
  2. Run the application:
    ./OSAlgoCalculator/bin/OSAlgoCalculator

How to Use

Input Format

All number inputs use space-separated values.
Example: 0 1 2 3 4 — each number followed by a space.

System Requirements

  • OS: Linux (64-bit)
  • RAM: 256 MB minimum
  • Java: Not required — bundled with the app

Note: The .deb and portable ZIP are Linux-only (amd64). Windows and macOS builds require separate packaging steps.


Building from Source

Requirements: JDK 17+, JavaFX SDK 17+, IntelliJ IDEA

  1. Clone the repository
  2. Open in IntelliJ IDEA
  3. Configure JavaFX SDK in File → Project Structure → Libraries
  4. Set SDK path to your local JavaFX installation
  5. Run Application.Main

To rebuild the distributable packages:

# 1. Compile and create the fat JAR (intermediate build artifact)
cd out/production/AlgorithmOS
jar cfm AlgorithmOS.jar MANIFEST.MF .

# 2. Copy JAR to jpackage input
cp AlgorithmOS.jar ../../../dist/jpackage-input/

# 3. Build .deb installer
jpackage --type deb --name OSAlgoCalculator \
  --input dist/jpackage-input --main-jar AlgorithmOS.jar \
  --main-class Application.Main --dest dist/

# 4. Build portable ZIP (app-image)
jpackage --type app-image --name OSAlgoCalculator \
  --input dist/jpackage-input --main-jar AlgorithmOS.jar \
  --main-class Application.Main --dest dist/app-image-out/
cd dist/app-image-out && zip -r ../OSAlgoCalculator-linux-portable.zip OSAlgoCalculator/
