Problem And Outcome

  1. A release dispatched with version_override only renamed the tag; the binaries still reported .genvm-monorepo-root's version. The plan now hands its tag to every build and test cell, and apply-release-version writes it into .genvm-monorepo-root before nix runs. An override therefore misses the nix cache entirely
  2. The amd64-linux release test cell spent about 14 of its 28 min fetching 2 Rust toolchains (5.1 GiB of NAR at ~1.5 MB/s per stream from the Attic cache) and rebuilding cargo-afl:
    1. rust.nix stored every component twice. The dev toolchain drops from 2.96 to 1.45 GiB, the builder toolchain from 2.17 to 1.06 GiB
    2. A new release-tests dev shell carries only cargo, rustc, the host and wasm32-wasip1 std, wabt and the runner's Python deps. The toolchain closure is 0.74 GiB; zig no longer leaks into it through the rpath

Validation

  1. support/ci unit tests: 106 passed
  2. The slim toolchain built storage_root (sdk-rs example, wasm32-wasip1) in a clean env; genvm-tool configure passes in release-tests
  3. The test-release-pipeline label exercises the whole pipeline on this PR
  4. Independent review: findings on the unanchored version regex, the overbuilt test and the zig closure leak are addressed

Delivery And Limits

Targets v0.6-dev in 2 commits. The rust.nix change alters every genvm-rust hash, so the first CI run rebuilds and re-pushes everything built with it

The pushed tag points at a commit whose .genvm-monorepo-root still holds the old version, so rebuilding from the tag with an override does not reproduce the published binaries

The per-stream cache throughput is server-side: Attic's small default chunks. Raising [chunking] sizes is a separate change on the cache host

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Release Improvements
    • Release version overrides now consistently set both the release tag and the version embedded in release builds and tests.
    • Invalid release versions are rejected unless they follow the supported version format, including optional prerelease or build metadata.
  • Documentation
    • Updated release guidance to explain how version overrides affect build inputs and release assets.

📝 Walkthrough

The release pipeline validates version overrides and applies them to the repository configuration. Release workflows pass planned versions to build and test cells. The stable-test step uses a dedicated release test environment with its own Rust toolchain and packages.

Changes: Release pipeline

Layer / File(s) Summary
Validate and apply release versions
support/ci/pipelines/release.py, support/ci/unit_tests/test_release.py
Release version validation now requires a complete vMAJOR.MINOR.PATCH version, with optional prerelease or build metadata. A new command applies valid overrides to .genvm-monorepo-root. Tests cover unchanged, valid, and invalid overrides, and release planning.
Configure the release test environment
support/rust.nix, flake.nix, support/ci/pipelines/release.py
Rust cross-compilation components and Zig are conditional on their configuration options. The flake adds a release test toolchain and shell. The stable-test step uses the release-tests installable.

Release workflows pass the planned tag to build and test cells, which apply it before their build or test steps. Workflow descriptions and release documentation state that the override sets both the release tag and embedded version.

The release pipeline changes look sound overall. Two small edge cases remain: a version override Git cannot tag, and a Zig-dependent helper that is installed without Zig. Both are easy to fix and can be handled before or shortly after merge.

A release dispatched with version_override only renamed the tag: every cell still built from .genvm-monorepo-root, so the binaries reported the old version. * fix(nix): stop genvm-rust from storing every component twice 🐛
* perf(ci): run release tests in a slim release-tests dev shell ⚡
* fix(nix): keep zig out of genvm-rust built without the zig wrapper 🐛

rust.nix copied each tarball's top-level directory as well as the component directories inside it, so $out held every component twice. The dev toolchain shrinks from 2.96 to 1.45 GiB of NAR, and the builder toolchain from 2.17 to 1.06 GiB.

The amd64-linux release test cell used the mock-tests shell, which pulled 2 toolchains plus a from-source cargo-afl build: about 14 min of its 28. The release-tests shell carries only cargo, rustc, the host and wasm32-wasip1 std (0.74 GiB closure, zig no longer leaks in through the rpath), wabt and the runner's Python deps.

robo-kp2pml30: @kp2pml30 ready except E2E: everything passed but genlayer-project-boilerplate, which failed (first attempt and retry) on the known npm edgesOut crash (vitest 4.1.12 vs @vitest/browser-webdriverio 4.1.11), unrelated to this PR — E2E run.

  • GenVM full green on 50d1ec1, 0 behind v0.6-dev; amd64-linux release-test 28 → 11.4 min (#release-tests shell in 22s)
  • Not merging red: waiting for a decision to merge over it, or for the boilerplate fix
