# Overview

The String Web Access API returns any page on the web as clean, LLM-ready Markdown, runs a
structured web search, and maps a site's URLs.

# Example Use Cases

**Competitor price watch into a warehouse**

- Fetch a product page on a schedule, extract fields with a JSON schema, and append the result to
Google Sheets, Postgres or BigQuery. No parser to maintain when the page changes shape.

**Research agent with live sources**

- Run Search Web on an incoming question, fetch the top results as Markdown, and pass them to
OpenAI or Claude in the same workflow. The model reads the page text, not raw HTML.

**Inbound lead enrichment**

- When a form submission arrives, fetch the company's site, pull the fields you need with a schema,
and write them back to HubSpot or Salesforce before the sales rep opens the record.

# Getting Started

1. Create a free account at [portal.usestring.ai](https://portal.usestring.ai/sign-up). The first
5,000 requests are free.
2. Open [Settings](https://portal.usestring.ai/settings) and copy an API key.
3. In Pipedream, connect the String Web Access account and paste the key. Pipedream sends it as a
bearer token, so the key never appears in a step's code.

# Troubleshooting

**402 Payment Required** — the key is valid but the account balance can't cover the request. Top up
in the portal.

**A fetch comes back empty or incomplete** — set **Render JavaScript** to true for pages that build
their content in the browser, or set a **Country Code** for sites that serve different content by
country. Failed requests are not billed.

📐 Maintainability & Code Quality | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Replace "Failed requests are not billed" with a statement that matches the provider's billing rules.

String's fetch documentation says that most failures are not billed. It also says that a target TLS/SSL failure can be billed when an upstream attempt has already done billable work. Those 502 responses include x-billed-request-type. The README states that no failures are billed, which is not correct.

📝 Proposed fix
-country. Failed requests are not billed.
+country. Most failed requests are not billed; some upstream failures (for example a target TLS error
+returned as `502` with `x-billed-request-type`) can still be billed.

Review comment at @components/string_web_access/README.md around lines 36 - 38:
Update the fetch troubleshooting note to state that most failed requests are not
billed, while noting that certain upstream failures, such as target TLS errors
returned as 502 with x-billed-request-type, may still be billed.

system (system) March 19, 2021, 3:53pm 4

Dylan Sather (Pipedream) : thanks. I do see that you’re making a large number of HTTP requests in your workflow, one at a time, and that is expected to take some time. I’d recommend two things:

  1. In your workflow’s Settings, increase the execution timeout to 300 seconds (the max for a given invocation)
  2. Can you increase the number of items you fetch in a single page, or otherwise parallelize the HTTP requests you make inside of that for loop, so that you can reduce the total number of HTTP requests?

# Setting a Timeout for HTTP Requests

Help

fled (Fled) April 25, 2023, 3:39pm 1

Hello fellow Pipedream users,

I have a question about making HTTP requests in Pipedream and setting a specific timeout for the server to respond. I’m working with an API that takes a while to return a response, but the default timeout in Pipedream is too short and ends up cutting off the request before the response is received.

Is there a way to specify a longer timeout for the HTTP request in Pipedream, so that I can give the server enough time to respond? For example, if I know that the API response may take up to a minute, but the default timeout in Pipedream seems to be only a few seconds, how can I extend the timeout to accommodate for the longer response time?

Any help or guidance would be greatly appreciated! Thank you in advance.

That might be what you’re running into, it’s a simple fix just update the timeout limit in the Settings of your workflow: Settings</excerpt>

I’m getting the following message “You’ve exceeded the default timeout for this workflow.” It’s timing out on the first step with a simple HTTP webhook

Screen Shot 2023-10-26 at 1.27.56 PM.png1690×518 32.6 KB

user-1 (User 1) November 2, 2023, 6:48pm 2

The default timeout for HTTP requests sent with `$.send.http()` is 5 seconds. This time includes DNS resolution, connecting to the host, writing the request body, server processing, and reading the response body. If your request exceeds this 5-second limit, you’ll receive a timeout error. If you’re experiencing timeouts frequently, you might need to optimize the request or the server processing time to ensure it completes within the allowed time frame.

user-1 (User 1) November 2, 2023, 6:48pm 3

It’s an inbound http call

user-1 (User 1) November 2, 2023, 6:48pm 4

The presentation of the timeout error is actually a bit misleading. Even though it looks like the trigger timed out, we don’t know for sure where in the workflow the timeout actually happened.

user-1 (User 1) November 2, 2023, 6:48pm 5

Are you calling any 3rd party APIs in the workflow? That’s often where we see timeouts coming from, but you can raise the timeout threshold in the workflow settings.

user-1 (User 1) November 2, 2023, 6:48pm 6

Thanks . I’m not

user-1 (User 1) November 2, 2023, 6:48pm 7

It was working great yesterday… Replaying old events that worked before are now failing

Can you tell me (or Pi) more about the workflow?

user-1 (User 1) November 2, 2023, 6:48pm 9

execution time time is usually ~10sec

user-1 (User 1) November 2, 2023, 6:48pm 10

trigger is an HTTP request (json payload, small dict)
2nd is a simple python parsing step
3rd is an HTTP Post to another workflow
4th is an HTTP Post to another workflow
5th is a slack message

user-1 (User 1) November 2, 2023, 6:48pm 11

Retrying them eventually works… and execution time is still ~10sec

# Does the Time Set in Workflow_Delay Count Towards the Total Workflow Time Limit?

This topic was automatically generated from Slack. You can find the original thread here.

Is the time set in workflow_delay included in the time limit for the entire workflow?

user-1 (User 1) November 16, 2023, 8:57pm 2

No, the time set in `$.flow.delay` for a workflow is not included in the time limit for the entire workflow. The length of time a workflow is delayed does not impact your credit usage or the workflow’s execution time limit. However, using `$.flow.delay` in a workflow will incur two credits. One credit is used to initially start the workflow, then the second credit is used when the workflow resumes after its pause period has ended. For more details, please visit: Delaying a workflow

Why does a TIMEOUT error appear after using workflow_delay?

user-1 (User 1) November 16, 2023, 8:57pm 4

A TIMEOUT error typically occurs when a workflow exceeds its maximum execution time. For free tier users, the maximum execution time for a workflow is 30 seconds. If you’re using `$.flow.delay` to pause your workflow, it’s important to note that this doesn’t extend the workflow’s execution time limit. If your workflow is timing out after using `$.flow.delay`, it’s possible that other parts of your workflow are taking too long to execute. You might need to optimize your workflow or consider upgrading your Pipedream plan for a longer execution time limit. If you continue to experience issues, please visit https://pipedream.com/support for more support options.

How run puppeteer script once per day at random times, if I’m using $.flow.delay to pause my workflow, but I can’t extend the workflow’s execution time limit by more than 300 seconds and the delay time is included in the workflow’s execution time limit?

user-1 (User 1) November 16, 2023, 8:57pm 7

To run a Puppeteer script once per day at random times, you can use a combination of the Scheduler trigger and `$.flow.delay` function. First, set up a Scheduler trigger to run your workflow once per day. Then, in the first step of your workflow, use `$.flow.delay` to pause your workflow for a random amount of time. This will ensure your Puppeteer script runs at a random time within the day. Here’s an example of how you can set this up: ` export default defineComponent({ async run({ steps, $ }) { // Generate a random delay time in milliseconds (up to 24 hours) const delayTime = Math.floor(Math.random() ** 24 ** 60 ** 60 ** 1000); // Delay the workflow for the random amount of time $.flow.delay(delayTime); // Your Puppeteer script goes here // ... }, }); ` Remember that the delay time set in `$.flow.delay` is not included in the workflow’s execution time limit, so it won’t cause your workflow to timeout. However, the actual execution time of your Puppeteer script should not exceed the workflow’s execution time limit. Please note that while the workflow is paused, it will not incur any credits towards compute time. You can also view all paused workflows in the Event History.
Can the time set in the add step function “workflow_delay” exceed the time limit in the workflow timeout?

user-1 (User 1) November 16, 2023, 8:57pm 14

No, the time set in the “workflow_delay” step cannot exceed the workflow’s execution time limit. The maximum execution time for a workflow is determined by your Pipedream plan. For example, on the free tier, the maximum execution time for a workflow is 30 seconds. If you need to delay your workflow for a longer period, you can use the “Delay Workflow” action, which allows you to delay your workflow for …[truncated]</excerpt>

Dylan Sather (Pipedream) : Hi , workflows timeout after 30 seconds of execution by default, but that limit can be raised in your workflow’s settings: https://pipedream.com/docs/workflows/settings/#execution-timeout-limit .

You shouldn’t see that error when deploying your workflow, though. Would you mind clicking the Share button at the top-right of your workflow, and share it with dylan@pipedream.com?

Dylan Sather (Pipedream) : thanks. I do see that you’re making a large number of HTTP requests in your workflow, one at a time, and that is expected to take some time. I’d recommend two things:

  1. In your workflow’s Settings, increase the execution timeout to 300 seconds (the max for a given invocation)
  2. Can you increase the number of items you fetch in a single page, or otherwise parallelize the HTTP requests you make inside of that for loop, so that you can reduce the total number of HTTP requests?

Hi @zvictor

First off, welcome to the Pipedream community. Happy to have you!

That’s a really neat way to improve the looping control, thanks for sharing.

Another tool to use in Pipedream is the `$.send.http` interface. Unlike a normal HTTP request in code, the `$.send.http` will queue the HTTP call after the workflow is finished.

That way you can send a batch of HTTP calls and not affect the workflow’s execution timeout.

### HTTP

Pipedream Documentation - Connect APIs, remarkably fast

I suggest switching your `axios` usage with a destination HTTP call instead, because you’re not using the response of the HTTP call in this case.

I like the idea of processing in the background, which is possible in the browser, but unfortunately that won’t work in Pipedream or Node.js. The workflow’s execution is terminated once the functions are finished await’ing.

You’ll need to return a Promise, or await all asynchronous operations within Node.js code steps. </excerpt>

<excerpt>citeturn0search4 [wordlim: 200] Published: 2.5 years ago; Crawled: 3 months ago; This code checks if the current workflow is about to time out and triggers another workflow using the Pipedream API: ` import { axios } from "@pipedream/platform" export default defineComponent({ async run({ steps, $ }) { // Replace `workflow_id` with the ID of the workflow you want to trigger const targetWorkflowId = "your_target_workflow_id"; // Replace `YOUR_API_KEY` with your Pipedream API key const apiKey = "YOUR_API_KEY"; try { // Your workflow logic here // ... } catch (error) { if (error.message.includes("Timeout")) { // Trigger another workflow if a timeout error occurs await axios($, { method: "POST", url: `https://api.pipedream.com/v1/workflows/${targetWorkflowId}/dispatches`, headers: { "Authorization": `Bearer ${apiKey}`, "Content-Type": "application/json", }, data: { // Optional: Include any data you want to pass to the triggered workflow }, }); } else { // Handle other errors console.error("An error occurred:", error); } } }, }) ` Please note: - Replace `your_target_workflow_id` with the ID of the workflow you want to trigger. - Replace `YOUR_API_KEY` with your actual Pipedream API key. - This example uses a try-catch block to catch any errors that occur during the execution of your workflow.
2. Trigger a Secondary Workflow: When a timeout is detected, trigger a secondary workflow. This can be done using Pipedream’s built-in mechanisms like webhook triggers or by using external tools that call a Pipedream workflow’s HTTP endpoint. 3. Send a Line Message in the Secondary Workflow: In the secondary workflow, use the Line integration to send a notification about the timeout. Here’s an example component code that sends a message via Line: ` import { axios } from "@pipedream/platform"; export default defineComponent({ props: { line: { type: "app", app: "line", }, }, async run({ steps, $ }) { const message = "A timeout occurred in the primary workflow."; // Customize your message return await axios($, { method: "POST", url: `https://notify-api.line.me/api/notify`, headers: { Authorization: `Bearer ${this.line.$auth.oauth_access_token}`, }, data: `message=${encodeURIComponent(message)}`, }); }, }); ` Remember to replace `"A timeout occurred in the primary workflow."` with the specific message you want to send or any details about the timeout. This approach requires manual intervention or external monitoring to detect timeouts and trigger the secondary workflow. Directly handling timeouts within the same workflow that experiences the timeout is not feasible because the workflow execution would be stopped once the timeout limit is reached. Lixiv Maureal : Where are these syntaxes `$.export`, `$.respond` , `$.flow.exit` expected to be used?
I do not see them being used in any existing source/action, and `$` is not defined in workflow steps as well.
Can someone point out what is a valid use case for each and an example of where it is being used currently?

user-2 (User 2) October 24, 2021, 11:12pm 2

Dylan Sather (Pipedream) : We typically `return` data from actions in the Pipedream registry as a matter of style. That way the data is always exposed in the `$return_value` export (provides a consistent UX). In your own actions, though, `$.export` can be useful for returning 1) named exports (e.g. `steps.nodejs.name`) or 2) returning more than one value from a single.

The actions in the GitHub registry are primarily tied to third party APIs, and don’t use `$.respond` because users should choose the data issued in the HTTP response. So for most of these actions, `$.respond` is irrelevant. But again, you can use it in your own actions if you’re trying to abstract commonly-used code where you want to issue an HTTP response.

`$.flow.exit` is the equivalent of `$end` in code steps. Like with `$.respond`, there’s not a strong use case for using `$.flow.exit` in the registry actions, because it’s often not relevant when we’re talking to third party APIs. The primary case where we want to halt workflows is on fatal error (e.g. an action returns a 404 error), and `throw` already halts the execution of the workflow.

Eventually, you’ll be able to reference the `$` in code steps. We’re planning to ship that with our new workflow builder (entering beta soon). Once that’s released to the general public, we’ll expand the docs on the `$` to make it more clear how you can use it in normal code steps.

Hey team, I’m still pretty new to Pipedream but I’m loving it for the most part. My biggest issue is running into Timeout errors pretty regularly. I keep increasing the timeout limit with each error, but it doesn’t seem to reduce the chance of a timeout. Here’s an example of a recent Node step that timed out. Please let me know if you have any suggestions to prevent Timeout errors. If there are better ways to determine what caused the Timeout, that would be great too.

Note, I’ve obscured parts of the URL in the example for security. This code will not work if you try to run it.

Do not use a 300-second default wait in workflows with the default timeout.

Pipedream reports a 30-second default workflow timeout and a 300-second maximum. This action approves the crawl before polling, so it can time out before returning jobId. Set the default wait below the workflow timeout with enough margin for the API calls, and export jobId immediately after approval.

🐛 Suggested fix
     await this.app.approveSitemap({
       $,
       jobId: quote.jobId,
     });
+    $.export("jobId", quote.jobId);
