Access logs currently show the Docker gateway or reverse proxy address, which prevents identifying the source of a sync request during an account-session investigation.

Use the existing trusted X-Forwarded-For resolver and configured proxy hop count for access logs as well as rate limiting. Direct connections and missing or invalid forwarded headers keep the peer-address fallback. No new configuration or database migration is required.

Validation: reproduced the proxy-address bug with an access-log regression test before the fix; all 75 server tests pass afterward. Coverage includes two proxy hops, spoofed headers on direct connections, IPv6, and malformed or missing forwarded headers. Formatting and git diff --check pass.

Changes made by GPT-6.1-sol through the Codex harness in T3 Code.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The server now uses a custom access logger that records the client address resolved by the shared helper. Rate limiting also uses that helper. Documentation and tests cover forwarded-address trust, proxy-hop counts, fallback behavior, and logged values.

Changes

Client IP access logging

Layer / File(s) Summary
Shared client-address resolution
src/handlers/user.rs
The rate-limit middleware and request check use request_client_ip. The helper accepts an HttpRequest and retains peer fallback and trusted-proxy address selection.
Access logging and verification
src/config.rs, README.md, src/main.rs
A custom logger writes the resolved client address as the first field, or - when no address resolves. Documentation describes address resolution for access logs. Tests cover trusted and untrusted forwarded addresses, proxy-hop counts, IPv4 and IPv6, missing or invalid values, and omission of authorization tokens.

Access logs now record the client address resolved behind trusted proxies, and direct connections still fall back to the peer address. No merge-blocking risk was identified.

Global logger setup can make the test fail or flake.

log::set_logger(&LOGS).unwrap() panics if another test in the same binary already installed a logger. The log crate allows only one global logger per process. log::set_max_level also changes global state for other tests. If any other test in this binary installs a logger, this test fails.

Current evidence shows no other logger setup, since main calls env_logger::init_from_env only at runtime. Keep this test the only global logger user. Alternatively, use let _ = log::set_logger(&LOGS); and filter by target, so the test tolerates reordering.

Note

🤖 GPT-6.1-sol responding on behalf of Nico

Regarding the logger-setup nitpick at src/main.rs:336–338: this is the only test in the binary that installs a global logger; the runtime main is not executed by the test harness. Captured records already filter on the dedicated access-log-test target, and all 75 tests pass together.

Ignoring a failed set_logger call would leave LOGS uninstalled, so the output assertions would still fail and the underlying problem would be less explicit. Keeping the registration assertion preserves that signal. If another logging test is added later, both should share one capture fixture.

The docstring-coverage warning mainly covers the test fixture and its trait methods. Additional boilerplate documentation would not improve this focused logging fix, so it is left unchanged.
