Starting in their sophomore year, students explore various subject areas in the sciences that interest them, first by reading and evaluating general literature, then progressing to journals in scientific literature. Areas of study that may be investigated include mathematics, technology, physical sciences, life sciences, social sciences, psychology, and more.

Science Research improves student's written and oral communication skills. During their research, students take notes and write responses to articles in their own lab notebooks. Students’ work is frequently reviewed to ensure progress on their projects. Students are also required to give presentations on their findings about twice a month. Other students give constructive criticism regarding improvements on their research as well as presentation skills.

Once students have selected an area of research they would like to pursue, they conduct original research under the guidance of a mentor as well as the research teacher. Students continue their work throughout the summer and school year of junior year as well as senior year.

Security Survey of Network-Enabled Devices of the River Dell Student Population

Research and Presentation by Michael Vasile and Gregory Sarafian (Sophomores)

Network-enabled devices, such as computers, smartphones, and tablets, have become a main-stay in many households. These devices have become deeply integrated into the lives of their users. In the age of frequent, sophisticated cyber security exploits and attacks, there is an increasing concern with the security of the devices, more so with the protection of minors who may use them. In this research study, we plan to develop a method to survey theses to find a trend in device vulnerabilities. We are aiming to survey the devices of members of the student body at River Dell High School. Further data analysis will be carried out to determine any trends in exploits and establish a relative benchmark for device security.

Sex-Specific Neural Activity

Presented by Noelle Almonte and Caroline Chan (Juniors)

Internalizing disorders, such as depression and anxiety, are characterized by internalization of negative emotions. It has been established that females are at a greater risk for internalizing disorders than males, but few studies have examined the neural mechanisms of such illness. A recent study conducted using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) examined the reaction times and differences in brain activation between different sexes and in both healthy and ill participants. Participants were shown a series of white arrows pointing either left or right on different sides of a cross-hair midline and were asked to press a button to report which direction the arrows were pointing in. Reaction times were found to be greater in ill females than in ill males, and females were found to deactivate portions of the default mode network (DMN) to a greater extent than males. Deactivations of DMN regions were also greater in ill females compared to ill males. Further research into the possible sex differences in the DMN may provide additional insight into the mechanisms of depression and the higher prevalence of depression in females.

Mapping Dark Matter Halos

The Milky Way is a very large place, but it didn’t exactly begin as large as its current size. Galaxies eat and envelop one another through their gravitational pulls relative to their mass. But the majority of a galaxy’s mass does not come from regular matter, but rather halos of dark matter that surround a galaxy. Dark Matter is undetectable, however we do know it exists because of its gravitational pull on all things. When galaxies devour other galaxies, the galaxy being consumed leaves behind a stream of stars which all have similar properties such as metallicity . These stellar streams could not only help us investigate how galaxies initially began on an evolutionary scale, but also can give us insight on the shape of the dark matter halos that surround our own Milky Way.

Observation of Gravitational Waves from a Binary Black Hole Merger

Presented by Jacob Nam (Sophomore)

In 1916, Albert Einstein predicted the existence of gravitational waves in his general theory of relativity. Since the 1960s, numerous attempts have been made to experimentally detect gravitational waves. On September 14, 2015, gravitational waves were finally detected and were confirmed on February 12, 2016, about one hundred years after Einstein's prediction! Gravitational waves are ripples in the fabric of space-time, formed when large masses coalesce. They travel at the speed of light and distort whatever they travel through, including the earth. The Laser Interferometer Gravitational Waves Observatory (LIGO) detected this phenomenon, and this proof could lead to a completely new scientific field. This discovery is so significant because it allows us to observe the universe without the use of electromagnetic radiation, comparable to a deaf person receiving their sense of hearing. Black holes, not able to be seen, can be "felt" in this way, and we will be able to learn much more about them.

1.6V Nanogenerator for Mechanical Energy Harvesting Using PZT Nanofibers

Presented by Hahram Kim (Sophomore)

Piezoelectric nanowires, as demonstrated in their name, possess the remarkable capacity of generating an electric field through applied stress. Thus, piezoelectric nanowires and nanofibers are currently seen as a potential base for energy harvesting nanogenerators, carried out by converting mechanical energy to electrical. However, the recorded piezoelectric voltage constant of semiconductor piezoelectric nanowires in the most recent piezoelectric nanogenerator is inferior to that of nanomaterials constructed from lead zirconate titanate (PZT). These semiconductor piezoelectric nanofibers are also limited in the fact that the fabrication process of these semiconductor nanowires possesses drawbacks that could affect the length of these nanowires, cutting down on the potential electrical output of these nanogenerators. Thus, PZT-material based nanowires are currently the primary candidate for use in these nanogenerators. To overcome some of the limitations in semiconductor nanofibers, an incredibly efficient nanogenerator using PZT nanofibers on interdigitated electrodes is currently under testing in order to demonstrate its superior energy output and efficiency.

The X-47B: The Salty Dogs of The Future

Presented by Sean Kee (Sophomore)

The X-47B, also known by their code name "Salty Dogs", is an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV). Development began in 2000 by Northrop Grumman when the U.S. Navy finally saw the practical need for a UAV. However, this craft has one major function that makes it more technologically advanced than any UAV ever. The X-47B has the capabilities to take off and land on all 11 of the Navy's aircraft carriers. Not only does this give this fully autonomous stealth craft the ability to perform one of what most pilots deem as the hardest task, it also gives the X-47B extreme range and versatility. Now that it can be deployed from carriers, the X-47B will be able to complete a wide range of missions overseas. When the X-47B finally finishes development, it will give the United States another edge in its military power.

Hyper Dendritic Nanoporous Zinc Foam Anodes

Presented by William Lee (Sophomore)

Zinc has a rich history as an anode in a battery, but it has been overlooked by the far more popular lithium ion batteries because of its abundance and solid performance. Zinc has an undesirable trait; the formation of dendrites that leads to electrical short circuits. Conventional zinc battery systems that use composites, pastes and powders all have limitations. To try and solve this problem, researchers have tried to use a method of synthesizing zinc foam electrochemically. The zinc foam is formed by a three dimensional networks of dendrites that is electrochemically active and electronically conductive. This foam exploits dendrites and uses it to suppress initiations of dendrites during recharge. The battery has been tested and it has shown significant capacity retention after 100 charges and discharges.

Graphene Biosensors That Stick to Skin

Presented by Alyssa Kim (Sophomore)

In 2004, Graphene was first isolated using a simple but groundbreaking method: scotch tape. Graphene has become a phenomenon in the modern bioengineering world because its physical and chemical capacities- it’s one atom thick, 200 times stronger than steel, and conducts electricity, yet is biodegradable because graphite is carbon based- have proved to be useful in many biomedical applications, including wearable sensors. Biosensors is a general term used to describe sensors that detects specified biological components. In this study, Graphene-based wireless single cell bacteria detection on tooth enamel was done with single layered thin-film inductor-capacitor resonant circuit Graphene printed on silk and placed on tooth enamel, similar to how a temporary tattoo is applied. The large surface area of the Graphene and electrodes allows it to adhere to biomaterials, such as tooth enamel in this case. An external energy source is not needed because of the circuit, and data can be obtained remotely. Today, Graphene has become a valuable tool for scientists to advance in nanotechnology.

Biomedical Electrospinning

Presented by Chris Moon (Sophomore)

Tissue engineering, an actively growing field of biomedical engineering, is the study of the growth of new tissues from the use of scaffolds and cells. The scaffolds are made out of materials which have distinct characteristics, such as biodegradability and self-assembly. There are currently several methods that can be used to create these scaffolds along with a wide array of various materials that have been tested. One method in particular is Electrospinning. The technique was previously used in the 1900s to create fibers for clothing, but it has been growing in popularity due to its potential and versatility. The nanoscale fibrous mat is created by a polymer solution, which is shot out of a cone and a strong electric voltage is applied to it. The electrostatic repulsion, which is from the voltage, counteracts the surface tension and the drop is stretched out. The jet solidifies during flight and is deposited in the collector. The finished product closely resemble the matrix found in the body. As of now, researchers are experimenting with other materials, such as synthetic polymers and natural macromolecules, to create fibers with even smaller diameters.

Effectiveness of Immunotherapy (Anti PD-L1, 2) in Different Cancers

Presented by Mary Ham (Senior)

PD-L1, 2 (Programmed Death Ligand 1 and 2) blockade is an emerging cancer treatment that harnesses anti-cancer immunity in cytotoxic T cells. However, PD-L1 blockade is not effective in treating all cancers. To identify factors that make Immuno-oncology more effective in treating cancer, it was hypothesized that Immuno-oncology is more effective in cancers that exhibit higher mutational burden.

Cancers that exhibit high mutational burden were identified based on genome analysis of various cancers, and the clinical trials of the selected cancers were analyzed through RECIST (Response Evaluation Criteria In Solid Tumors). Two types of cancers, non-small cell lung cancer and colorectal cancer with mismatch-deficiency, were selected for analysis. As a control, the objective responses of ovarian cancer and colorectal cancer were also analyzed and compared with the objective response of Melanoma and colorectal cancer with mismatch-proficiency. Compared to ovarian cancer and colorectal cancer with mismatch-proficiency, non-small cell lung cancer and colorectal cancer exhibited higher percentage in objective response. Based on the data, the hypothesis was supported, but showed that the degree of mutation is not the only factor of effectiveness of Immuno-oncology.

Unravelling the Mysteries of the Invisible Universe

Presented by Matthew Lu (Sophomore)

Cosmology is defined as the study of the nature, structure, and evolution of the universe. Throughout history, mankind has been on a quest to answer the fundamental questions of the universe: What is our purpose in life? What is in space? Are we alone in the universe? The list goes on and on. Great scientific minds like Newton, Einstein, and Hubble have vastly expanded our knowledge of the structure and laws of the universe. At the turn of the 20th century, it was believed that our understanding of the universe was more or less complete, and the few gaps in our understanding would be solved given time. But all of this changed with Einstein’s discovery of quantum mechanics and relativity. Although we have made significant strides in understanding in just the last century, our understanding of the way the universe works leaves much to be discovered, and huge questions remain unanswered.

Nano-wire Electrodes by Spin-Spray Layer-by-Layer Assembly

Presented by Brian Kim (Sophomore)

In order to produce fully functional transparent devices a more versatile battery structure is required. The current generation of transparent battery electrodes are thick (20-100µm) and are composed of optically absorbent material. By using a different, controllable method the fully functional battery is brought closer to reality. This method uses a rapid, and controlled spin spray layer-by-layer (SSLbL) method to create high quality 1D nanomaterial networks. This method helps create thin transparent layers of anions, something unseen in conventional methods.
