- GTK 4 and Libadwaita development libraries
- ClamAV (
clamdscanand/orclamscan) - Meson >= 1.0.0
- A C compiler (GCC or Clang)
On Debian/Ubuntu:
sudo apt install libgtk-4-dev libadwaita-1-dev clamav clamav-daemon mesonOn Fedora:
sudo dnf install gtk4-devel libadwaita-devel clamav clamav-update mesonOn Arch:
sudo pacman -S gtk4 libadwaita clamav mesonmeson setup build --prefix=/usr
sudo ninja -C build installsudo ninja -C build uninstallBy default, clamd runs as the clamav user, which cannot read most user files. This means clamdscan will return "Permission denied" errors on files owned by other users.
To allow WuMing to scan all files on the system, configure clamd to run as root.
sudo mkdir -p /etc/systemd/system/clamav-daemon.service.d
sudo tee /etc/systemd/system/clamav-daemon.service.d/override.conf << 'EOF'
[Service]
User=root
Group=root
EOFsudo sed -i 's/^User clamav/User root/' /etc/clamav/clamd.confsudo mkdir -p /etc/clamav/tmpNote: WuMing will also attempt to create this directory automatically if it is missing.
sudo systemctl daemon-reload
sudo systemctl restart clamav-daemonps -o user,comm -p $(pgrep clamd)
# Should show: root clamdWuMing falls back to clamscan (slower, non-daemon) when clamd is not running. Make sure the service is active:
systemctl status clamav-daemonIf you see permission errors, either:
- Configure
clamdto run as root (see above), or - Run WuMing as root (not recommended for regular use)
Update virus definitions manually:
sudo freshclamOr use the update button in WuMing's overview page.
Check that the temp directory exists:
ls -la /etc/clamav/tmp
# If missing: sudo mkdir -p /etc/clamav/tmpCheck clamd logs:
